Nursing Professional Development in the UK

As of April 1999, PREP (Post-Registration Education and Practice) legislation came into force and from April 1998 this needs to be adhered to in order to re-register with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) every three years.

Having received your NMC registration with your PIN (Personal Identification Number) you will need to renew this every three years. You will receive a statement of entry (SOE). This is your proof of registration, you should keep this safe. Your card has your number but is not proof of your registration. Clients may request to see your card so be sure to carry it with you at all times.

As of April 1999, PREP (Post-Registration Education and Practice) legislation came into force and from April 1998 this needs to be adhered to in order to re-register every three years. Essentially, what this means is that within the three year cycle you will have to attend and provide evidence of a minimum if 5 days training relevant to your specific clinical area, keeping up-to-date and keep a PREP profile file. Your PREP file will contain all the information on your work and training experience - which include start and finish dates.

The simplest way to remember how to compile a PREP file is by using the three main stages of profiling as directed by the NMC guidelines. These are:
- Reviewing your experience to date
- Self appraisal
- Goals and Action Planning for development

The NMC PREP leaflet and self directed study packs are available from Geneva Health upon arrival.
